Christafari And Cookie Dough

Saturday, July 7, 2007 - Day 16

Distance Traveled - 3 miles

Day off today to see Santa Cruz and spend time with Georgia. Pretty tired as well after riding 70+ miles yesterday.

After meeting Georgia at her work and hanging at her place for a while, we went downtown to go to the grocery store and to a bead store for her. Before going into the grocery store, Georgia heard some reggae music coming from the park. We decided to get some lunch and go check it out. We bike over there, and it looks pretty standard - big white guy with dreads on stage singing, not too many people in the grass, mostly weird-looking, in the grass following the movements that the singer is instructing. Some of them have solid-colored flags that they are waving. So we find a shady spot and sit down to eat. It isn't long before the singer starts singing about Jesus. Hmm, that's not what most reggae is about. Then we notice some of the signs around: Santa Cruz means holy cross, something about a revival, and then the best of them all - Christafari. When we first walked up, I could only see half the sign, and I assumed it just said Rastafari. I was wrong. What the hell is Christafari? I didn't know that existed. In between songs the guy was preaching Jesus, quoting the Bible, telling anecdotes. It was weird. Looking around, I hate to say it, but it was funny. People were dancing, but they all seemed to be missing a screw or two. I mean, we were in Santa Cruz, but this was a bit much. We stuck around long enough to eat our lunches and then split.

After our errands downtown, we went back to Georgia's place. Earlier in the day I had told her that at the end of each day of biking I seem to crave cookies, especially chocolate chip. So she decided that we were going to make some so I could take some cookies with me when I leave. So we got a recipe from her roommate, decided to make a double batch, gathered the ingredients and set to work. We mixed up the dough then realized she doesn't have a baking sheet. While she was getting one from the neighbor, I helped myself to a little dough. It was tasty. We put a small batch in the oven, and I had a little bit more dough. With only one pan, we ended up having to do about 7 or 8 rounds of baking. With each round, and sometimes inbetween, I ate a little cookie dough. That stuff is so good.

Well, now that it's just before time to go to sleep, I've had a lot of cookie dough, a beer, and some pasta and salad. I am not feeling very good. I need to just sleep it off, but I feel like I might puke.

Georgia loves Christafari!

This is real

Who knew that Santa Cruz means holy cross? That must mean that Christafari is legit.

HAHAHA!! Too funny about Santa Cruz! There are ALOT of Christian communes, etc in the hills and mountains around Santa Cruz. Some legit, some cults. My girlfriend used to live in one of the communes there in the early 80's. She thinks the town is very evil and all the town activities are done to seduce people into joining the cults. I don't know if that's true or not. What I do know from personal experience is that Santa Cruz gave me the creeps and I couldn't wait to get out of there.

Take care, be safe!
