Good Tunes, Good Times, Good People

Thursday, August 2, 2007 - Day 42

Woke up today feeling shitty. I slept for a while, but I was still tired and a bit uneasy in the old stomach. Ate a bunch of garlic bread that I picked up at the grocery store last night. It was a buck and some change for a huge loaf. I think I ate too much of it, though. I didn't feel like going out into the hot sun and riding my bike, so I hung out at Max's apartment for a while. After I ate some chili around 2 or 3, I started feeling better.

I was able to get on my bike for a little bit, but really all I wanted to do was lay down in a park and write. I haven't had any good writing time in a while, and there are so many things to be written. Not long after I got to the park, though, Max got back from work and I had the keys so I needed to go back to let him in. Then it was getting ready to go to the show tonight, Dusty Rhodes playing downtown with Jonny Lang. So we hopped on a bus and headed over there around 7:30. The show started at 8. The band was awesome. The crowd was weird. They were all huge, huge Jonny Lang fans. I had never seen the guy before, but I have to admit, he puts on a good show. His band is really good as well. The old people absolutely loved it. They just couldn't get enough of it. I had a funny realization as I was standing and watching the D. Rhodes kids and looking around at the crowd. For the last year I have been living in L.A. and going to shows there, and I guess that's just what I have become used to, the crowds at those shows. Looking around at the show here, I was surprised that everyone was not good-looking. There were a lot of weirdos there. I thought it was really funny that I even thought about that. One thing to consider, however, is that it was a Jonny Lang show, not a Dusty Rhodes show, and not a show that would otherwise be catered to youth. His audience is generally older. Most of the shows that I went to in L.A. were catered to and frequented by hip, image-conscious youngsters. This was just such a change of scenery. I enjoyed it.

Anyway, hung out for the Jonny Lang portion of the show with the band. Then we came back to Max's apartment and drank. I can't tell you how good it feels to sit and drink with a bunch of people that I know. I've had some drinks with new friends along the road, but nothing can replace good, comfortable conversation with friends over an ice-cold Red Stripe Jamaican beer. It makes me really happy that this timing worked out like this. It's a packed apartment in here with everyone hanging out, and it's going to be sleeping in tight quarters tonight.
